Okay, so I told you all that I was entering CBR Runway again this year, and it's that time! The contest has started and the first challenge has been posted. The challenge was to " create and design an original comic book superhero inspired by
Instead of super powers, this character should utilize real life skills or talents, exaggerated if youd like, that youve acquired or developed through work, hobbies, etc., and be named appropriately. Your costume may consist of natural or synthetic materials and should reflect your own style, skill-set, and character name.
In addition to the required written description explaining material, functionality and design inspiration, you should include a short description of how this character is based on you. "[link]
This is my contest entry:
Born in New Carrollton, MD, in the area known as P.G. County, a young man by the name of Tre grew up loving to design and draw. Another passion of his was helping others. Tre was known around the neighborhood as the "big brother". Many people would go to Tre for advice and council. They also loved his artwork. Many said they were inspired by him. Tre began to use his creativity and his counseling skills, first as a Boy Scout, then as a camp counselor, youth leader for various groups, and a finally his current occupation as a teacher in the nation's capitol: Washington, D.C.
Distraught at the fact that the youth of today were in a steady decline of deteroration and headed for destruction, Tre was inspired to stop crime with his art and his heart. Especially when it was brought to his doorstep via the death of his younger brother...Going to his engineering friends, they designed a weapon that fitted Tre's style ( ): The Stylus 2008. The Stylus is able to use Tre's creative ingenuity to create pictures that seemingly "come to life" and appeal to the urban youth of today, showing them an alternative to the life that they live. Tre Styles became "GraphX, The Urban Inspiration"..a hero for this generation.
Skills: Tre is an urban style artist who loves to design urban heroes, and creating new legends. He has extremely prolific ideas and creative energy. He is a great communicator, a writer as well, knows many different first aid techniques, and is a educator to the young and the old. He has enlisted his cousin, Terry to teach him the martial arts to handle the more "hardheaded" criminals who don't want to listen to "reason".
I wanted something that I would actually be comfortable in wearing, and somethng that I probably would wear. The jacket (kevlar...of course. lol)'s outside design is in a stylized "X" form showcasing my creative side. My shirt has a "G" for the "Graph" part of my name...thus "GraphX". The shirt itself is a fitted turtleneck. Then, I have the black jeans, the hoodcap, and the shades are for what I call "The Style Factor"...lol. Just having fun. The shades are actually medically prescripted, since I have a stigmatism in my eyes which means I wear glasses all the time. But thanks to my engineering friends, these special shades give me a superior range of vision up to 1 mile in any direction, as well as a connection to the internet. The Stylus, which is my pencil weapon is explained above. Also is a cybernetic glove that is connected to my drawing hand which is linked to interface with the Stylus. The colors definitely reflect me...which are blue and black, I think gives off my type of vibe which is usually mellow. I do have another version of this character in red and black, which are the colors that my brother loved, and also mine as well.
It's me, Samuel Clover, III aka Tre Styles. I used my "Style" netname as my hero's name, because it's supposed to be "based on me"....and man, I use Tre more than I use my own given name....at least on-line...so there you go. lol. There are parts of my "origin" for this character that aren't really true, but Matt said we could exaggerate, so I did this with my friends who really are engineers, and techies but I don't know if they could invent something like that ....although you never really know. I just wanted to reflect some aspects of my personality in the design, and I think that it came through here. I really do want to inspire youth through my creations, as well as my lifestyle. I spend countless hours teaching them throughout the school day, tutoring, and mentoring in my afterschool time.
